Yesterday morning during yourMain event, Apple introduced the first hardware update for the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 2 retains the same basic body design as its predecessor. Although it is 0.9mm thicker, the internals have received a significant upgrade in terms of power and features. With the Series 2, Apple appears to be repositioning the watch to be more of a health and fitness oriented rather than an all-purpose device, and the hardware upgrade options reflect that idea as much as the featured keynote.
reposition
I'll discuss this first because the shift is significant and important to understanding where the Watch is going. The Apple Watch is not the same watch we knew in September two years ago. This watch had extremely lofty goals of high fashion and technological marvel. It was sold as an aluminum "Apple Watch Sport" for health and fitness, a stainless steel "Apple Watch" for those not prioritizing fitness, and a gold "Apple Watch Edition" for $10,000 and up for those who could afford it. . the cost. for nothing more than luxury. It's a very, very different watch than the one announced in yesterday's keynote address.
The Apple Watch Series 2 dropped the "Sport" moniker. Standard and sport watches are now just "Apple Watch" but with the option of aluminum or stainless steel. That would put them on a par now, except the vast majority of Apple's marketing for the Apple Watch features nothing more than aluminum models. In fact, the stainless steel Apple Watch only appears once in theApple Watch Home on Apple.com: in the image of the Hermès special model, “fashion”.
As for the Apple Watch edition, I hope there aren't rich people waiting to buy a gold Series 2 because the days of the $10,000+ Apple Watch seem to be over (although I'm sure this will make the resale market for the boom of the originals). In the new lineup, the Apple Watch Edition is no longer gold, but a pearly white ceramic. The ceramic was specially designed by Apple and is apparently four times stronger than steel. This makes the ceramic model extremely resistant to scratches and stains. Supposedly, each individual ceramic case that Apple makes requires such a delicate amount of work that it takes several days to create.
The price of all this? Solo (used only compared to last year's edition models) $1,249. Apple completely got rid of the super high end of the fashion market.
The final nail in the coffin of the original Apple Watch marketing is the new slogan: "The best device for healthy living".
The days of the high-end all-in-one Apple Watch are over. Long live the Apple Watch mass market fitness device!
O Apple Watch Nike+
With Series 2, Apple Watch is all about health and fitness. This goes far beyond promoting the Sport edition to a mod-free title. The main features of the new Apple Watch are almost all fitness-related, and the highlights too. Even the game that gained prominence at the event,Pokémon Go para Apple Watch, is tangentially related to fitness. With that in mind, it's no surprise that this year's new Apple Watch doesn't come from another fashion mogul like Hermès, but belongs to sports and fitness superpower Nike.
The new Nike-branded Apple Watch consists of a custom watch face available only to watch buyers and a custom band. The band is basically a standard sports band in construction, but includes distinctive cutouts across the entire surface, the interior of which is a different color than the surrounding area. The result stands out and I really like it a lot.
The band is available in four different colors, varying the scheme between light and dark gray and a neon green-yellow (Nike calls the color "Volt"). The watch face reflects these colors and is available in several different styles, all incorporating Nike's unique font and logo. The Apple Watch Nike+ also includes a permanent complication at the bottom of the screen for the Nike+ Run Club app, which I assume comes pre-installed on devices as the complication cannot be removed.
The Apple Watch Nike+ will benoit will ship at the same time as other Apple Watch models. It is listed for availability in "end of October".
GPS
To be the fitness powerhouse the Series 2 aims to be, it will help if you don't need to be within range of an iPhone or Wi-Fi connection at all times. While general internet capabilities are still out of reach without these crutches, the Apple Watch Series 2 is taking a big step in the right direction with the introduction of built-in GPS.
Earlier versions of the Apple Watch relied on its iPhone counterpart to take care of GPS tracking, but with the Series 2 this is no longer necessary. The new GPS will record accurate distances and speeds on its own, which should be a boon not just for tracking runs and other workouts, but also for the speed and responsiveness of location tracking through Maps.
The inclusion of GPS is a step forward in the inevitable future of an Apple Watch untethered from its iPhone ball and chain. There is nottoo manymore items to check off here on the list before the future becomes a reality.
Waterproof
The original Apple Watch was rated splash-proof and mostly waterproof, but submersion is not recommended. The Apple Watch Series 2 ups the ante and receives a water resistance rating of up to 50 meters. This means that the Apple Watch can now be used safely when swimming in pools or the sea, and should generally remove any concerns about using the Apple Watch in potentially aquatic situations.
From a fitness perspective, this change in direction positions the Apple Watch as an excellent tool for swimmers, and Apple made that very clear during the keynote. According to Apple's top announcements, they've created a new algorithm that allows the Apple Watch to more accurately track the calories burned during a swim workout, and can even count the number of laps a swimmer takes. To complement the new tracking features, Apple will also release new workout types for the Activity app, one for pool swimming and one for open water swimming.
The last thing to note about the Apple Watch's new waterproof design is the innovative answer to the speaker waterproofing problem. As Apple highlighted during the keynote, speakers require airflow to work properly, and anywhere air can access, so can water. To compensate for this, Apple has come up with a new design where the speaker itself is used to physically expel any water that ends up inside after the Apple Watch is submerged. This cleans the speaker and prevents water from getting trapped inside. I think this is a very intriguing design idea and I look forward to seeing it come to life.new line of waterproof iPhoneat some point in the future.
new screen
Apple Watch Series 2 also features new display technology designed to increase brightness. According to Apple, the new Series 2 screen is capable of producing 1000 nits of light. Not only does it make it 2x brighter than the previous Apple Watch screen, it's also the brightest screen Apple has ever released on any product. This change should be a big step forward for viewing the contents of the Apple Watch's screen in bright sunlight (which, of course, is commonly needed during runs or other workouts).
performance
Not surprisingly, the Apple Watch Series 2 received an impressive boost in performance. The new watch features an updated dual-core processor inside the Apple-designed S2 chip. This provides up to 50% faster performance than the original Apple Watch. The GPU has also been updated, resulting in twice the graphics performance of the previous model.
Taken together, the performance improvements in Series 2 are uncomplicated but welcome. Along with watchOS 3's speed and efficiency improvements, these new features inside are sure to make Series 2 significantly better.
To involve
The Apple Watch Series 2 marks a new direction for the world's most popular smartwatch, which isn't the kind of changes Apple often makes to its products. I think it's pretty safe to say that this is the direction the Apple Watch has taken over the last year and a half on the market. The huge reduction in the Edition's price seems to show that Apple's foray into high fashion has not been successful. The Sport's promotion to a standard model and the accompanying change in marketing points to what was probably a vast majority of Sport watches sold even in stainless steel models. Understanding Apple's product direction can often take a bit of tea-leaf reading, but for the Apple Watch Series 2, it's surprisingly clear.
So fitness is the future, at least in the present. Regardless of course correction, the Cupertino company has still taken a solid step forward for its smartwatch platform. While I wouldn't complain about seeing some other cool new health sensors or an improvement in battery life, the advancements we've received continue to build the strong foundation of the Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch will be available for pre-order starting September 9 at 12:01 am. m. and will ship from September 16th. Aluminum Series 2 models, including the Apple Watch Nike+ (when it launches in October), will start at $369. Stainless steel Series 2 models start at $549.
In a surprising last-minute twist, Apple is also updating the internals of the original Apple Watch (now called the Series 1). The only change is replacing the Apple Watch's original S1 chip with the new S2 chip, which increases the watch's speed by 50%. The updated Series 1 will only be available in aluminum models and is sure to be a competitive new option for Apple Watch purchases, starting at just $269.
